چکیده

A simple and highly sensitive method for the identification and quantitative estimation of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) concentration in urine is described. 5-HIAA was concentrated following extraction into ethyl acetate, and separated from other indolic acids by paper chromatography. A color reagent, p-dimethylaminocinnamaldehyde, was used to detect 5-HIAA on paper, in concentrations as low as 0.1 1Lg./cm.2 Urinary excretion levels could be measured below the normal range as well as in the normal range and above.

A Method for Quantitative Extraction of Urinary 5-hydroxyindoleacetic Acid.

HE QUANTITATIVE ESTIMATION of urinary 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) has attained clinical importance with increasing interest in indole metabolism. Urinary 5-HIAA levels have largely been determined by the use of an extraction procedure described by Udenfriend et al. (1). The author has found, as have others (2), that this method produces inconsistent results on varying dilutions of a giv...

A rapid and accurate quantitative method was developed and validated for the analysis of four urinary organic acids with nitrogen containing functional groups, formiminoglutamic acid (FIGLU), pyroglutamic acid (PYRGLU), 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), and 2-methylhippuric acid (2-METHIP) by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS). The chromatography was developed using a ...

Automated determination of 5-hydroxyindolylacetic acid in urine by high-performance liquid chromatography

5-hydroxyindolylacetic acid (5-HIAA), a major serotonin cata-bolite, is eliminated in urine. In carcinoid tumours, 95 ofwhich occur in the small intestine, large quantities of serotonin are secreted by the entero-chromaffin cells of Kultchizky-Masson. Early detection of these tumours is essential, since unless they are surgically treated in the initial stages then their prognosis is serious. Ea...
